Teach the Future, which promotes future literacy among educators and students, participates in the G20 Social Summit, with Rosa Alegria, Global Planning Director, representing the organization. This is a critical moment to strengthen future literacy and engage young people in building a more sustainable and just world. The presence of Teach the Future, in partnership with the School of International Futures (SOIF), the Toriba Institute and the International Youth Observatory (OIJ) reinforces the urgency of intergenerational governance to ensure that today's decisions include considerations fo the well-being of future generations.
The G20 Social Summit 2024, taking place November 18-19, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, will address key issues for global development, such as intergenerational justice and combating climate change. Rosa Alegria will participate in a side event on Participatory Foresight: Youth and Climate Adaptation, which will discuss strategies for engaging young people and empowering them to deal with the climate challenges that will directly affect their lives and the future of society.
“This is a unique opportunity in history in which the world agenda is beginning to value the active and effective participation of new generations in global and local decisions.” —Rosa Alegria
In particular, Alegria will highlight the need to prepare young people for the future and climate adaptation by integrating future literacy into the school curriculum. This approach, aligned with the UN's Pact for the Future, highlights the importance of including young people in decision-making that impacts the long term.
In addition, Rosa's participation in developing the G20 Policy Brief brings essential contributions to promoting long-term governance that prioritizes future generations. The document, drawn up together with other experts, offers a model for G20 countries to implement sustainable and fair public policies. This Policy Brief recommends planning and monitoring practices and reinforces civil society's role in building a more equitable and resilient future.
With Rosa's participation, Teach the Future also supports the creation of the G20 Intergenerational Hub. This collaborative space aims to unite leaders, young people, and policymakers to promote concrete actions favoring sustainability and intergenerational justice. The movement's commitment to bringing futures literacy to the G20 discussions demonstrates the transformative power of preparing new generations for global challenges, highlighting the role of young people in building solutions that can guarantee a better future for all.
